I cant get cheat codes to work.

I've finished the game and am now starting a new game and profile. I want to
start off fast but I cant get any of the cheat codes to work. I followed
these instructions;

" Type these codes at the intro screen (the one that comes up before the
main menu that says "Press Enter" - right before your profile is loaded). If
accepted, a small 'beep' will be heard."

I get the beep but when I enter the game there's no change.
