Well it is, pretty-much. It even starts of easy then suddenly switches to
'impossible'. Or maybe I'm just p!ssed-off that I can't get anywhere? Not
sure which ;-)

I've complete around 60% in a couple of days. I could win most races easily
in areas 1 and 2. Just now hit the third area and can't get *anywhere*. I'm
losing every race! I have the most expensive car, kitted-out with every
'pro' upgrade possible and yet I'm having to use my NOS just to stay
somewhere near the middle of the pack! Damned annoying :-(

Also, any tips on how to 'drift', especially in a canyon and on 'straight
lines' would be appreciated. I know the idea is to move the car sideways and
am quite good in the wide tracks but can't get anywhere in the Canyons. Oh
yes, also, while trying the Canyon Drift Challenges, I can do okay but would
do much better if the game stopped taking thousands of points off me at
'split' points. WTF is that about?

Okay. Rant over ;-)

Do you really mean the 3rd or could it be the 4th area (Silverton, which is
on top)? Note that the game auto-adjusts the AI based on the peformance of your
car. It's easier to run a stock car with only street nitrous (and maybe the
first upgrade on tires). The 240SX is the fastest tier 1 car. If you have
collector's edition, you'll need to do one of the Challenge series (3 events)
to unlock the 240SX. The Lotus Elise is the fastest tier 2 car, but it's not
great for the Canyons. The VW Golf R32 is the fastest tier 2 canyon car.
For tier 3, the Lancer, stock except for street nitrous and tire upgrade is
probably the easiest to use for Silverton.

Note that the infinite nitrous and infinite speedbreaker cheats work in career
mode as well as quick race. The AI will adjust to a player using a lot of nitrous,
but don't react to a player using a lot of speedbreaker, so speedbreaker is the
easiest way to win races (espeically with infinite speedbreaker).
Also, any tips on how to 'drift', especially in a canyon and on 'straight lines' would be appreciated. I know the idea

For Canyon drifts, the key is to get the multiplier up. It will go to x20 if
you don't stop the drift or hit anything. You have 2 or 3 seconds between
drifts before the multiplier resets, so use a touch of handbrake on the long
straights to keep the multiplier going. Just one long drift will be enough
to beat the required point score. Here's a link to a video of a conservative
canyon drift challenge with the Lambo that's still way past the required
amount of points. For higher scores, you need to carry more speed than I did
in the first video.

Career mode info:

GETTING ALL REWARD CARDS IN A SINGLE CAREER

There are two career rewards that require advance planning.

Iron Wall - win 20 defensive races in career mode

Challenges only occur on non-completed races. If there is only one non-completed
race remaining, start the race, abort, and exit to free roam. Repeat until a
challenge occurs. Repeat this sequence until "Iron Wall" is rewarded.

Career Mogul - have a balance of 1,000,000 cash in Career Mode

Cheat code = 10,000. All career events = 1,123,000. Win and sell all 3 tier 2
boss cars = 122,500. 20 defensive races = 10,000. Neville = 200 per race.
Sampson = +10% for each race he’s in. Yumi = 10% discount on parts. Nikki = 10%
discount on tier 3 car. See career strategies below.

WINNING THE 3 TIER 2 BOSS CARS

To guarantee winning a pink slip for a boss car, disable autosave before
starting a boss race, win the races, then choose random markers. If you don’t
get the pink slip, reload game and repeat. When the pink slip is won, save and
reenable autosave.

UNLOCKING BOSS RACES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Each zone only requires winning 10 races, 2 per territory, to unlock a boss
race, which results in a new boss car and a new crew member as soon as possible.

REPEAT CAREER VIA BUSTED / IMPOUND / GAME OVER

Sell all but one car, go in to free roam, get busted and pay the fine, then
repeat until your car is impounded for too many strikes. Choose to start over.
All of the rewards will remain, and all parts and cars previously unlocked will
remain unlocked. However, there are no markers after winning boss races, so
there’s less total money in a repeat career.

CHEAT CODES

Cheat codes work in career and quick race.

Consoles (for PS2, X is square, B is triangle):
Add 10000 to career - down up left down right up X B
Infinite nitrous - left up left down right X
Infinite speedbreaker – down right right left right up down X
Infinite crew member – down up up right left left right X

PC
Add 10000 to career – 5grand5grand
Infinite nitrous - nosforeverever
Infinite speedbreaker – slowitdownwhenyouwant
Infinite crew member – friendlyheadlocksapplied

CAREER ISSUES

There is not enough money to get 1,000,000 in career and fully upgrade 3
different cars. The final tier 1 pro part doesn’t get unlocked until after the
first boss race, when the AI switch to tier 2 cars. The final tier 2 pro part
doesn’t get unlocked until after the third boss race, when the AI switch to tier
3 cars, except if the initial car is the Camaro SS. The Porsche Carerra GT
doesn’t get unlocked until after career is completed, except if the first car is
the Alfa Romeo Brera.

When choosing which events to race before defeating Angie, do the checkpoints,
drifts, and sprints on canyon roads, as Sampson isn’t present in these events.
After defeating Angie, hiring and activating Sampson, this leaves more events
for Sampson to race in, for more money.

CAREER UNLOCKS (pro, racing, cars):

CAREER SEQUENCE OPTIONS

Miser mode – career can be completed just using the tier 2 boss cars without
upgrades, using Kenji’s RX7 (and speedbreaker) in the tier 3 events.

Camaro SS, 240SX, maxed Lotus Elise, maxed Lancer.

Initial car is Camaro SS. Race Dover and Lepus, Morgan Beach Offramp. Buy 240SX,
install street nitrous and tires. Take over Kempton, race Angie, hire and
activate Sampson. Take over Downtown with 240SX, Charger, or Elise with racing
nitrous only (no parts discount yet). Race Kenji, hire Yumi (parts discount).
Upgrade Elise. Take over Fortuna. Race Wolf. Hire Nikki before buying Lancer.
Hire Yumi before buying parts. When career mode done, sell cars all but 240SX to
get over 1,000,000 in career.

Camaro SS, 240SX, maxed RX7, maxed expensive tier 3 car.

Initial car is Camaro SS. Race Dover and Lepus, Morgan Beach Offramp. Buy 240SX,
install street nitrous and tires. Take over Kempton, race Angie, hire and
activate Sampson. Take over Downtown with 240SX or Charger. Race Kenji, hire
Yumi (parts discount). Upgrade RX7 (it already has racing nitrous). Take over
Fortuna. Race Wolf. Hire Nikki before buying tier 3 car. Hire Yumi before buying
parts. When career mode done, sell cars all but 240SX to get over 1,000,000 in
career.

Muscle only – Camaro SS, maxed Charger, maxed Z06

Initial car is Camaro SS, install street tires and nitrous only. Take over
Kempton, race Angie, hire and activate Sampson. Take over Downtown with Charger.
Race Kenji, hire Yumi (parts discount). Upgrade Charger (it already has racing
nitrous). Take over Fortuna. Race Wolf. Hire Nikki before buying Z06. Hire Yumi
before buying parts. When career mode done, sell cars all but Camaro SS to get
over 1,000,000 in career.

Exotic only – Alfa Brera, DB9, maxed Porsche Carerra GT or other exotic

Exotic is the only mode where the Carerra GT is unlocked during career. Initial
car is Alfa Romeo Brera, install street tires and nitrous only. Take over
Fortuna, Race Wolf. Only add pro engine to DB9 (no parts discount). Take over
Kempton, race Angie, hire and activate Sampson. Take over Downtown, race Kenji.
Hire Nikki before buying Carerra GT. Hire Yumi before buying parts. When career
mode done, sell cars all but Alfa Brera to get over 1,000,000 in career.

Tuner only – RX8, 240SX, maxed RX7, maxed Lancer

Initial car is RX8. Run two races and buy 240SX, install street tires and
nitrous only. Take over Downtown, race Kenji, hire Yumi, use RX7. Upgrade RX7 as
pro parts get unlocked. Take over Kempton, race Angie, hire and activate
Sampson. Take over Fortuna, race Wolf. Hire Nikki before buying Lancer. Hire
Yumi before buying parts. When career mode done, sell cars all but RX8 to get
over 1,000,000 in career.

REWARD CARDS

Reward cards unlock visual stuff and non-competitive cars. Getting all reward
cards can take a lot of time. The easy stuff, buy 6 240SX’s for fill with tuner,
buy 6 Camaro SS’s for muscle, and 6 Alfa Brera’s for exotic. Lose any race –
crash into a canyon rail for a quick loss. Get busted - use a car you don’t plan
to keep, go into free roam, hit stuff or cars to trigger police. For pursuit
events, a maxed out Z06 is good. Turn off autosave and use the cheat codes for
pursuits, as the Z06 can run OK on rims with infinite nitrous. Z06 is also good
for 200mph speed trap if you haven’t done it yet. The longest single pursuit
event is ramming 100 police cars. 50K in fines requires a lot of pursuits. See
the infractions section (next). A maxed Z06 is good for 50 quick races if you
want to win; do canyon duel with Wolf, pass by and hang on for 2 turns to win.
If you don’t care about winning, just crash into rail. Most boring is 50 free
roam challenges, you go into free roam, wait 90 seconds before a challenger
appears, then pick a marker and race to it.

INFRACTIONS

speeding - 150+mph fine = 350
excessive speeding – 180+mph fine = 150
reckless driving – 200+mph fine = 1000
property damage – hit anything that can be moved fine = 100
hit and run – hit any civilian car fine = 300
ramming a police vehicle – hit a police vehicle fine = 350
evade pursuit – cooldown mode fine = 300

BEST CARS

Add these to your my car list, or buy them in career mode:

Tier 1 – maxed 240SX
Tier 2 – maxed Lotus Elise
Tier 2 – maxed VW GOLF R32 (for canyons)
Tier 3 – custom Audi Quattro
Tier 3 – maxed Corvette Z06 (for fast tracks)

CAR SETUPS

For the setups, 1 means left, 2 means center, 3 means right.
So 1 2 3 means top box left, middle box center, bottom box right.

for 240SX, Golf r32, Lotus Elise:

engine 3 3 3
transmission 1 1 1
suspension 3 3 3
nitrous 1 1 1
tires 2
brakes 2 2 2
turbo 3 3 3

tier 3 cars same as above with these suspension settings:

Carerra GT 3 2 2
Lancer 2 2 2
Mercedes SLR 3 2 2
Murcielago 2 3 3
Skyline 2 2 3
Z06 2 2 1

Z06 transmission setting = 3 3 3

Yes, those are tier 3 cars. Kenji's RX7 is faster than the tier 3 350z,
but the issue you're facing is that the AI car have sped up some. On some
tracks you'll need to use speedbreaker to win races. As posted before,
the AI won't speed up in response to speedbreaker usage, which gives
you higher cornering and corner exit speeds, but they will speed up
if you use nitrous, so focus on using speedbreker more. If you're stuck
use the inifinite speedbreaker cheat code.

With speedbreaker, the Porsche 911 is a very fast car. Without speedbreaker
the Z06 is the fastest career car (for example for online racing), but since
speedbreaker is an option the 911 will be faster. Also as mentioned, the
Lancer will be the easiest car to use for canyon duels. If I remember
correctly there are no drift events in Silverton.

Indeed. Been in this NG before and am well-aware of the man.
