You could get the spot patch, which updates the High Stakes
video driver to directx7 (I don't recommend the dx8z.dll, as some
stuff will look wierd).

Instructions included. Don't forget to run the d3d.reg file which
updates the registry for the high stakes driver, or else you'll
get a file corrupted message.

There's also an improved version of the video driver, a standard
and an expansion pack for high stakes (more cars and track), and
a program called iplounge with chat and tcp/ip matching for online
