NFSU2 hangs and no cheats

Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.
I can't get far in career mode as the game hangs at the "loading" screen in
various places - garage, choosing my first non-rachel car etc..

If I try typing in the published cheat codes at the enter screen to unlock
tracks & cars I get a beep , but the tracks/cars are still locked!

I've tried reinstalling, patching, what can I do next. I just want to race
on more than 2 tracks for my £20!

there is a patch in above in a msg, http://jeffareid.net/nfsmw/nfsmwau.zip

once u installed it in the correct folder, u login as nfsmw

Not that this helps much, but I'm having the exact same problem.
What's your machine's spec, what OS, etc?
Do you have any CD emulation software (like Daemon Tools) running?
