Most Wanted: Opponents cheating?

Hi

I read that the race opponents cheat - and tried it myself: If I'm
pretty good, they get faster and better and catch up with me again - so
if I make a mistake they win. But if I don't go to far... wait and then
race at the end of the game I win.

And also during Flash-Races (english?): If I speed from beginning, they
also are quite good and I win with perhaps only +20mph more. But If I
remain with them, at 2nd position and make full speed only for the
flash (Nitro!) then I can win with +150mph and more.

And now the best: I downloaded a Trainer for endless Nitro
(NfSMostWanted_Trainer3.exe from
http://dlh.net/cheats/pc/deutsch/need+for+speed+-+most+wanted/index.html)

-> I can speed with almost every time Nitro and make an incredible Time
in the 2nd run against opponent 9....(James, Sprint (Camden & Route
55): 8.1 miles) - but James will win if I make a little fault at the
end - and also has an incredible Time and awesome speed during the
run...

=> What do you think about this?? Or is this a known problem in Need
for Speed?

My solution: Don't drive to fast until the 30-60s before the end...

Thanks for any reply and enjoy gaming ;)

They sort-of cheat. It is caused by (atleast) two "features" of the
game: 1) catch up (which cannot be disabled in career) and 2) opponent
matching. So it is a known "problem".

Meaning, if you pull a big lead during a race, the computer opponents
will automatically speed up to catch up. This however very often leads
to them to "overshoot" the "catch up" and they just zoom past you
despite how well you yourself are driving. Even if you have unlimited
NOS. This also works the other way; if YOU fall behind, they will slow
down. That's why hanging back and only speeding up at the end often
works for an easy victory. Not much fun though.

And the second thing, it doesn't matter what car you are driving or what
performance upgrades you have installed. The computer opponents will
always be as fast (or as slow) you are. This also leads to the funny
fact that in career you actually don't have to buy any performance
upgrades for racing. Sometimes some races are even easier if you don't
race with a fully tuned car. Toolbooth races and police pursuits however
are different and require more and more performance as you advance
further in career.

Some observed AI behavior: if you hit any trackside objects, like walls,
trees, etc, the AI speed up. If you hit traffic cars though, the AI
don't speed up and often slow down soon after you do. So the point here
is to run clean laps, even if you run slower.

If an AI car gets ahead and you're running clean laps, the AI car will
usually slow down, just slowing down or making a mistake and hitting
something.

As you found, the AI will trigger off the maximum amount of acceleration
you use, and match it, usually continuing to accelerate as fast until
their speed is faster than yours. It's best to save the fast acceleration
for the end of an event.
