NFS High Stakes won't start with DX9

Had to install DX9 and new Nvidia Drivers to play GTA Vice City, which
runs great, but now NFS won't start. It works in software mode but no 3d.
Using P4 1.9g and geforce 4 with 4.14.10.4403 drivers. Any help? Thanks, bc

NFSHS works fine for me, you just need to know where to look for answers.
I'm running a 9700 pro (DX 9.0b) and at first I had trouble, but
www.needforbetterspeed.net has a good tutorial on how to get it to work.

OK.. now I am going crazy. I tried that website and I couldnt join
it. It keeps saying user name already exists (and I have some funky
ones). I couldnt search without being a member and I see nothing by
browsing that is in reference to Geforce cards.

I tried the spot patch. I followed instructions but when I rename the
dx8z.dll to d3da.dll and put in in the root of NFS then I get that a
required DLL is missing. Any advice?

I also tried downgrading to a different geforce driver for an older
card, but it doesnt recognize the card at all. What driver was use by
the previous poster? can u give a clip of instructions u used? did
it do the same thing as mine b4?

I have since done another wipe/reload... no avail. I also get the
same issue with Tomb3 cause it starts to load then blacks the screen
the puts me back to the desktop.

Thanks for all your suggestions! Someone please help more...:D

Use the dx7z.dll (renamed to d3da.dll) from the spot patch instead. Be
sure to copy all of the spot patch files into the 3dsetup directory.
After running the spot version of 3dsetup, you need to run the "...reg"
file to update the registry, or you will get a corrupted file error message.

Yep, same problem!

NFS:HS pretty much stinks for 3D compatibility. It absolutely refused to
run on my old Voodoo Banshee system but would run on my new GeForce 440MX.
When that died I swapped it for the new GeForce FX 5200 and loaded the new
drivers and DX9 and NFS:HS stopped working. Every other release of Need
for Speed I have works just fine: III Hot Pursuit, Porsche Unleashed and
Hot Pursuit 2 but High Stakes just crashes out to the desktop. Also tried
running with an ATI Radeon 9000 but that did not work either.

Even the demo version refuses to run on my system, so cannot use the dll
swap work around other people have suggested.

I have the exact same issue with my NFS HS and a FX5200. my eVGA tech
support seems mystified! I tried to dumb down to DX8 also , but
nothing works. I want to play that Damn game. I bought the stupid
card so I could play the NFS HP2 and that works great...

Also, I had wiped the system to install the new drivers so this is NOT
an old driver issue. I also have used the current drivers for my card

I had to switch back to older Nvidia drivers to play HS.
I keep old & new versions around, in case I want to switch back & forth.

Okay - I might have a fix.

Followed the advice of other people on this forum ( thank you everyone ) and
downloaded and installed the spot patch for High Stakes.

Once done everything works fine - although the opening screen is blank.

My configuration is as follows:

Athlon XP1800.
NVidia GeForce FX-5200 w/ 128Mb
Windows 98SE with DirectX 9 and latest NVidia driver.

I got the patch from this link:
