Discussion:
Is porsche 2000 really this horrible?

I bought the black edition two months ago and finished career mode last
night (whew) and decided to go back in time to some of the other nfs
games. So today I installed Porsche 2000 on my pc and applied the
necessary hacks/updates to make it work on Windows XP only to find that
it is not even worth going through the game for fun.

I read an earlier post in this group with a guy saying something like
'NFSMW is far
from another Porsche Unleashed"...what i wonder is this dude thinking?
Am I missing something with Porsche 2000/Unleashed or is this a classic
case of different strokes for different folks?

http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.games.need-for-speed/browse_frm/thread/55fc3904d6585210

For example, the world goes by so slow it feels like I am doing 20km/h
and the steering at any half respectable speed stinks. I played the in
the porsche test driver mode until the rally race (race # 6?) and then
just gave up. It seemed like a serious waste of time because the game
sucked so bad...haha.

Now don't get me wrong, i wasn't expecting a something even as good as
nfs:underground 1 but I was expecting a game that i would WANT to play.
jeez....Is porsche 2000 really this horrible?

hehe,,,thanks for any responses.

There must be something wrong with your setup. 1) I don't need any hacks
to make the game work on WinXP Pro, just install normally and it works
(for me). 2) No problems with sense of speed or steering. Works flawlessly.

Mind posting your system specs (cpu, gfx+driver version, ram atleast)?

Ps. In my opion NFSPU is the best of all NFS games (mainly because of
realistic driving physics (well, for an NFS game) and actual damage). Still.

Well, i tried the same, installed NFS PU on my winxp pro machine after
i finished NSFMW a couple times and it was unusable.

Machine-Specs should easy allow it, but nevertheless it is so slow you
can't play in it.

Machine:

AMD 4800
7800GTX
2GB RAM
etc.

Limiting the game to one core didnt help either, but it told me it
would run the graphics in software-mode since it didnt find any of the
supported graphic chipsets.

I had to install an ufficial patch to make it work with I upgraded til
XP. It also installed some extra snacks (made by some game-freak :-)

Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon XP +1700 CPU
512 MB Ram (i think it's PC2700)
Asus A7S333 Motherboard
ATI Radeon 7500
-Catalyst Driver v05.13
-OpenGL v6.14.10.0362
-Direct3D v6.14.10.5525
21" Trinitron @ 640x480 for nfs:pu

I have played and finished both nfs:underground1 and most wanted with
this system and loved it. There is a command line updater that
sometimes has to be run for nfs:pu to work properly on XP (
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=142 ) which actually did
improve the game play. Before I applied the update the game it was
displaying what looked like three frames every two seconds (yikes! slo
mo!). Now it seems smooth enough and the game seems to be running like
it should but ...it just is not enjoyable. I say 'running like it
should' because it is consistently terrible the whole time. It doesn't
get better. Unless the cars get faster and more responsive as you
progress throught the game, I think i may have been spoiled by the
newer games, that is nfs:underground1 and up.

=[

oh well, I haven't played nfs:underground2 yet! hehe..

I would recommend this update for NFS5 - Porsche Unleashed:
Select the "first enhanced" version 3.5.

http://www.nfshome.com/utils.php?version=5

Next be sure to run 3d-setup or else the game runs in software render
mode which slow.

The incar view in this game seems slow. Even the bumper car view doesn't
seem that fast, but replays from fixed camera views seem pretty quick.

The fast cars are the 1995 911 Turbo and the 1998 GT1. The older cars
just aren't that fast.

realistic
NFS2SE in sim mode was pretty descent.

NFS5 - Porsche Unleashed has some issues. First, a fully souped up 1995
turbo 911 pulls about 3g's in the game, a bit past realistic. Next the
all out race cars a realtively slow. The GT1 is faster than the 1995
turbo, but not by much and requires taking advantage of a bug in the
game.

Still compared to it's predecessor, NFS4 - High Stakes, it is more
realistic, but the tracks are milder so the game seems slower. NFS4
did have more of a sensation of speed, and the NFS4 track layouts
required faster inputs. NFS4 has the most arcadish physics of all
the NFS games, but it's was and is still fun.

Back to NFS5 and some tuning bugs:

Front downforce doesn't do anything other than add drag to slow down
a car.

Rear downforce adds overall downforce, but the added downforce doesn't
improve cornering grip or cornering speeds at all. The downforce does
keep a car from going airborne over crests though. 70% to 80% is enough
for the fast cars, and use less for the slower cars.

Toe in just adjusts the front to rear grip bias. Move it to the right
for more front grip, less rear grip for more oversteer and to the left
for less front grip, more rear grip for less oversteer. The 4WD cars
should have toe set far right, the older 2WD cars need it far left.

Conering grip increases with tire pressure, so set the fronts to
45psi. Setting the rears to a bit less pressure, like 42psi, gives
you some lift throttle oversteer which helps in NFSPU. The GT1 can
use even less pressure at the rear, like 40psi. Slower cars should
be 45/45 since they need all the top speed they can get.

Ride height should be set lowest.

Suspension should be set stiffest.

Forgot to include this one.

By setting top and final gear adjustments to the maximum
negative values, for example GT1: 6th at -0.25 and final
to -0.50, aerodynamic drag on the car is reduced. This
makes 6th too tall to be useful, but you then setup
gears 1 through 5 for racing. Top speed at Zone increases
from about 205mph to 235mph.

This will work for any car in NFSPU, but only the 3 race
cars have adjustable gearing.
